When I think of Southern Norway, I think of all of the absolutely stunning areas in Norway, that you can easily visit by only driving a couple of hours north of the south coast. However, if you do a quick Google search on Southern Norway road trip itineraries, you will stumble upon itineraries that include places as far north as Bergen and even Ålesund 12 hours north of Kristiansand! And to me, this just doesn’t match the description! If you are looking for a Southern Norway road trip itinerary, it is likely because the timeframe of your trip limits your from heading further north into the mountains and towards the famous Lofoten Islands. At least I know it was the case for me, when I was planning my Southern Norway road trip this summer! In this post, I promise you I have only included amazing road trip stops that you can easily visit on a short trip from the South coast.
How Is Southern Norway Compared To The North?
Speaking of the south coast of Norway, I know the main question on my mind whilst planning my Southern Norway road trip was this: What does the scenery in Southern Norway even look like? Will it even mildly compare to the beautiful pictures of Lofoten Islands, Bergen and more with its dramatic cliffs and mountains, azure waters and incredible wildlife? Well actually: yes. Although there is only one Lofoten Islands (and there is a reason it is so popular), I was actually incredibly surprised by how much mountain scenery there was just 30 minutes north of Kristiansand! Included in the road trip stops in this post are enough beautiful mountains, picturesque Norweigan villages, peaceful fjords and dramatic cliffs to fulfill your travel desires.
How Long Should I Spend On A Southern Norway Road Trip?
I would rather ask: How long do you have? You can easily drive around Southern Norway for 2-3 weeks without heading as far north as Bergen and never run out of incredible places to explore! However, if you are limited on time – like I was – it is definitely possible to experience a lot of what Southern Norway has to offer in around a week long road trip. But I have to tell you this: You will always wish, that you had longer.

Kristiansand is likely one of the most charming cities in Norway and for this reason also a MUST visit on your Southern Norway road trip. Families flock to its popular amusement park, Dyreparken, while others enjoy the charming old town, Posebyen, with its white wooden houses and cozy cafes. The bustling fish market, fresh seafood restaurants, and stunning nearby islands also make it a delightful destination for soaking up the Norwegian summer vibe. Spend your days shopping, sailing through the archipelago and relaxing before heading out on the road!

Just search for “Kulpane Parking” on Google Maps, follow your maps to find the natural pools and prepare for an experience your wont quickly remember.

No Southern Norway road trip would be complete without a stop at the iconic Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) and the breathtaking Lysefjorden. Go On A Road Trip Between Rygnestad and Dalen And Meet More Sheep Than You Could Possibly Imagine
The drive from Rygnestad to Dalen along Borsævegen was perhaps the most stunning part of our Southern Norway road trip. As we journeyed through the landscape, it transformed from serene fjords and lush forests to dramatic cliffs and winding mountain roads. We began to see signs warning of sheep on the road, and soon enough, we were navigating an hour-long drive through the most charming Norwegian scenery. We frequently had to slow down or stop for mountain sheep lounging on the road as if it were their personal space. Another highlight of this scenic route is reaching Dalen, which turned out to be the cutest mountain town we encountered. Be sure to stop by a local bakery for a fresh cinnamon bun and a coffee, take a leisurely stroll, and enjoy this picturesque detour on your journey

Another fantastic experience on your Southern Norway road trip is exploring the charming Norwegian villages scattered along the south coast. Among my favorites are Mandal, Risør, and Lyngdal, each offering its own unique appeal. Mandal impresses with its coastal charm, Risør with its well-preserved wooden architecture, and Lyngdal with its beautiful mountain scenary. If you’re up for a bit of friendly competition, don’t miss out on a round of adventure golf in Lyngdal—it’s a great way to add some playful excitement to your journey!
Go Chasing For Some Of The Many Easy-To-Reach Waterfalls In The Area
Although we are still in the very south of Norway, there are plenty of waterfalls to be chasing on your road trip! As a matter of fact, you will find yourself almost overwhelmed by the amount of them, as you make your way through the valleys from your A to B. One challenge, that we faced during our Southern Norway road trip, was that many of the famous waterfalls could only be reached by a day- or even multiday hike. And although this would be ideal for my adventurous heart, we simply did not have the time to do them. So, I set out to find waterfalls that are easily accessible from the roads. Based on this search, I highly recommend visiting Reiårsfossen and Steinfoss. Both are spectacular and can be admired just a few meters from the parking lot.
Pay A Visit To The Norweigan Capital – Oslo
Finally, a Southern Norway road trip wont be complete without a visit to Oslo, the vibrant capital that perfectly blends modern city life with stunning natural landscapes. Nestled between the Oslofjord and lush forests, Oslo offers a unique mix of cultural experiences and outdoor adventures. Explore world-class museums, like the Viking Ship Museum and the National Gallery, or take a stroll through the modern waterfront area of Aker Brygge, filled with trendy restaurants and cafes. During the summer, Oslo’s parks and fjords come alive with locals enjoying the long days and warm weather, cold plunging in the waters and drinking cocktails in saunas on the harbor. Oslo is an experience like no other and a perfect end to your Southern Norway road trip!
